The young soldier thought the Bandidos were likely headed to the Viking Tavern and so went down to the Comanchero clubhouse to warn them. Many customers near the entrance to the tavern were ushered inside where patrons were lying on the floor. On Father's Day, 1984, members of rival gangs the Commanchero and Bandidos met in the car park of the Viking Tavern at Milperra, in Sydney's south west, and went to war.
